1. Physical Rest:
Lack of sleep and over-training in the field will deplete your body’s energy. Physical rest can be of two forms:
Active and Passive
Passive
- Sleeping for 7 and over hours nightly.
- Taking power naps as needed.
- Make it a habit (at least for the next 20 days).
Active
- Stretching your muscles.
- Get a massage.
- Use an ergonomic desk and chair while you work.
2. Mental Rest
Mental rest deficit is caused by over-taxing your thinking ability. Have you ever turned and tossed in your bed because your brain can’t turn off the thinking? What do you have to do about this?
- List down your to-do(s)
- Meditate for at least 15 minutes
- Take a break from problem-solving
- Create a checklist for your weekly routines and set a reminder.
- Create your personal space to separate work and life.
3. Social Rest
If you think that your social circle is getting too much into your life and mental health, it’s about to time that evaluates your relationships.
- Spend more time with people who give you energy.
- Spend more time with people who have similar goals as you.
- If you’re an introvert, block out time to be alone.
4. Spiritual Rest
- Being part of something bigger than yourself.
- Volunteer for temple/church activities.
- Work a job that feels purpose-driven and offers you relief.
- Participate in strong faith-based activities (if aligned with your belief system).
5. Sensory Rest
Overstimulation is a real thing and the modern Indian is highly overstimulated due to abusing technology. What do you have to do?
- Take a break from social media.
- Turn off notifications (especially sounds and visual alerts)
- Try to limit video meetings.
- Set a relaxing evening ambiance (soothing music and scented candles).
6. Emotional Rest
- The deficit of emotional rest occurs when you feel like you can’t be authentic. Eg. A steward must always smile, despite having rude passengers onboard. Solution?
- Spend time with people you can be authentic around.
- Try seeking help from a therapist to release emotional labor.
7. Creative Rest
Appreciate the beauty which can take many forms, whether natural or man-made.
Natural
- Take in sunrise or sunset.
- Go for a hike or a walk in nature.
Human-made
- Visit a museum or an art festival.
- Engage with inspiring music, books, and documentaries.
