China took 38 gold medals at the Tokyo Olympics, contrasting with 1 by India. China’s achievements in Tokyo Olympics are comparable to the overall achievement of India in the Olympics. We are lagging behind the rest of the world in sports by a ridiculously huge margin.
What makes China a legend in sports though?
Physical Education is part of the compulsory national curriculum set by The Ministry of Education (MOE) of the People’s Republic of China from the first year of primary school up to the second year of college. The weekly PE time for grades one to two should be four hours, and for grades three to six, three hours. MOE provides standardized teaching materials for the basic content of the curriculum. The basic elements are fundamental motor skills, athletics, games, gymnastics, martial arts, and other traditional sports. Such an environment helps China to integrate sports within the schedule from an early age.
So what can we do to scale up?
India is blessed with a diverse culture and can accommodate any sport by exploiting its distinct and all-inclusive resources. The government should strategize and promote sports through its already existing initiatives like Fit India Movement, Khelo India Scheme, etc.
The harsh truth is that the school curriculum is shaped so that they barely get time to accommodate anything within their schedule. Because of this, even after growing up, people don’t push themselves to go on the court/ground/gym and relax their minds and body even if it’s only for half an hour. If the student community gets an option to explore and build upon whatever sport they like from an early age, they’ll feel the urge to fit it within their schedules in the future.
To tackle this, we at Fitoverse are creating a one-stop solution for the mass.
We aim to provide our target institutes and organizations with a full-fledged way to incorporate sports within their curriculums in an efficient way.
Our three key pillars are – sports curriculum, sports infrastructure, and sports/fitness goods. We plan on proposing a structured and creative system to incorporate the academic curriculum, working hours as well as stakeholders like coaches, government, goods manufacturers, etc. We are pumped and excited to march toward our goal to build a self-sustainable sports culture in India, while bridging the gaps in the sports industry and we hope you all assist us in our journey to bring a change!
